No Poo

I have spent $0 on shampoo and conditioner in the past 2.5 years. And no, it’s not because I won a raffle that guaranteed me free hair care products for life. It’s because I’ve stopped using them!

Yes, I can hear the gasps from the audience (especially you, KT!), but I’m here to tell you that everything is okay and that I still have strands of keratin on my head that resemble hair.

The idea behind no poo is that shampoos wash away oils on your hair, which makes your hair produce more oil to compensate. Breaking that cycle is supposed to help your hair retain its natural oils.

I tried to find a website that could explain no poo, but some of them seem gimmicky so I’ll just describe my own experience.

It all started when I was a young warthog. Throughout my life, I haven’t ever done anything with my hair through my life besides comb it. It kind of just “is.” Since everyone’s hair is different, I would be more cautious before trying to go entirely without shampoo.

I remember the first few weeks feeling a bit icky but after that, everything was okay. My hair usually gets oily on day 3 of not washing, which is around the same as before. I haven’t noticed any drastic improvements or any downsides to not using shampoo/conditioner.

If I’ve gone swimming or there is literal dirt in my hair, I’ll use soap (I like this sacrilegious one). Other than that, I’ve found that doing nothing to my hair has been a good decision for me.

Is there anything you thought you couldn’t go on without but then ended up being fine without it? Let me know in the comments section. Also, if you’ve ever tried no poo or would like to try it out, I would be interested to hear all about it.

You’re right, I gasped a little bit, but then realized that deep down I’ve always wanted to do this too. Consider me inspired to jump on the no poo train!
